Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

What Is an MRI?

This highly sophisticated imaging test uses a combination of a powerful magnetic field, a special computer, and radio waves to generate detailed images of the inside of your body. It has become a preferred test among doctors for the evaluation of the brain and spine, blood vessels, and soft tissues within the body. Because MRI does not use radiation to obtain images, it can be used for children, women who are pregnant, and others who wish to limit their exposure to ionizing radiation.

At A.T. radiology, we offer different types of MRI systems at each of our centers. Our Lake Wales and Winter Haven Centers use 1.5T high field strength scanners, and our Davenport center uses the wide-open Hitachi ALTAIR scanner for those who may be anxious or claustrophobic in a traditional MRI machine.

Prostate MRI For Men

As of 2021, the American Urological Association began recommending prostate MRI before a biopsy for men at risk for prostate cancer. If family history, elevated PSA, or other risk factors have increased your risk, you can now have a non-invasive test to confirm—or rule out—prostate cancer.

A prostate biopsy carries certain risks and can cause a great deal of discomfort and inconvenience for patients. Prostate MRI has been shown to reduce the number of prostate biopsies performed, and if it turns out that a biopsy is needed, it can help make the biopsy more accurate by ensuring the samples are taken from only the most suspicious areas.

Clothing with any type of metal, such as zippers, metal buttons or snaps, cannot be worn. For women, underwire bras include metal and cannot be worn. If needed, a cotton dressing gown will be available for you to use.

In addition, please inform the MRI technologist if you have:

  • A pacemaker or other implanted cardiac device
  • Ear implants
  • Surgical staples
  • An implanted neuro-stimulator
  • Aneurysm clip(s)
  • Implanted drug infusion devices
  • Worked as a welder or grinder of metal

With some examinations, injection into a vein is required. The MRI technologist will explain the procedure further if your exam requires this.
