Women’s Imaging: Breast Biopsy

If your mammogram or other breast imaging test reveals a suspicious finding, your doctor may recommend a breast biopsy. A breast biopsy is a procedure used to remove a small tissue sample of the breast for further evaluation by a laboratory. The need for a biopsy does not mean that you have breast cancer. Only about 20% of the breast biopsies performed in the United States result in a confirmed case of breast cancer.

The Breast Biopsy Procedure at A.T. Radiology

At A.T. Radiology, we use ultrasound imaging to guide the biopsy needle into place within the breast. Unlike surgical biopsies of the past, this less invasive biopsy carries less risk and discomfort, as well as virtually no scarring.

During a biopsy, a small marking “clip” may be placed at the site within the breast where the biopsy was taken. This is so that the area can be located easily should any future intervention be needed.

Preparing for Your Biopsy

  • Stop eating four hours before your biopsy.
  • Stop drinking liquids one hour before your biopsy.
  • Please inform your technologist or patient representative if you take blood thinners (such as Plavix or Heparin) or anti-inflammatory medications (such as Advil, Pamprin or Motrin).
  • Wear a top that can be easily removed.
  • Do not use deodorant, perfume, powder or lotions on or near your breast on the day of your biopsy.
  • If your last mammogram was not performed at A.T. Radiology, please bring a copy of your latest mammogram report and images.

Breast Biopsy Aftercare

After your biopsy, you will receive antiseptic and a band-aid for your skin where the biopsy needle was inserted. You may experience some soreness. Please avoid any strenuous activity for the rest of the day.
