Women’s Imaging: Breast MRI

Like mammography, Breast MRI is used for both screening and diagnostic purposes.

For women at high risk for breast cancer, breast MRI is a proven and viable imaging tool to detect certain cancers that may not be found with other screening tests. For women who are pregnant, women with breast implants and women who are advised not to undergo an X-ray-based test, a breast MRI may be their best screening option.

Diagnostic Breast MRIs

As a diagnostic tool, breast MRI has the ability to show abnormalities in breast tissue that may not be seen on a mammogram or breast ultrasound. It is the most accurate way of determining the size of a cancer and the presence of other breast tumors, which makes it highly useful for pre-surgical planning. It is also used to monitor a patient’s response to cancer treatment.

Preparing for Your Breast MRI

With breast MRI examinations, no special preparation is needed. You may eat normally and take medications as prescribed. Please wear comfortable clothing. Do not wear an underwire bra on the day of your breast MRI, or any clothing with metal fasteners, snaps or zippers. If needed, we will provide a cotton dressing gown for you to use.

Please inform the MRI Technologist if you have any metal implanted devices, aneurysm clips, surgical staples or have worked as a welder or grinder of metal.
