Are Ultrasounds Safe?

Many patients worry whether a procedure is safe in the long run. When it comes to ultrasounds, there are no dangerous side effects and they’re proven to be a completely safe procedure. Ultrasound screening uses high frequency sound waves to develop pictures. These sound waves are safer than X-rays. According to marchofdimes.org, doctors have been utilizing ultrasounds for roughly 30 years, and there has been no evidence they are dangerous.

What are Ultrasounds Used For?

Ultrasound technology is an incredible mechanism that is extremely valuable to doctors and radiologists. The most commonly known use for ultrasounds is pregnancies. What many people don’t know is that doctors use ultrasounds for a wide variety of things. Here at A.T. Radiology, our doctors use ultrasound screenings not only for pregnancy, but Venous Doppler testing, breast screening and more. Venous Doppler testing is a unique type of ultrasound that is able to gather images of important arteries and veins. It can also be used to track blood flow in the circulatory system. A breast ultrasound can aid doctors in finding the presence of an abnormal mass.

Why Get an Ultrasound When Pregnant?

Other than confirming that you are actually pregnant, ultrasounds help your healthcare provider ensure that your baby is growing healthy and strong. Ultrasounds can show birth defects that would otherwise not be noticed until birth. Getting regular ultrasounds helps you and your doctor keep track of the baby’s growth and development. Ultrasounds are important to following you and your baby’s overall health throughout the pregnancy.

Is It Safe to Get Frequent Ultrasounds?

Ultrasounds have been well established as a safe procedure. There is no radiation being released during an ultrasound, so there are no concerns about radiation exposure. No matter what you are getting an ultrasound for, there has been no evidence that shows that getting frequent ultrasounds will cause danger. Getting an ultrasound frequently to check on the development of the fetus will not do any harm to you, or your baby. Some mothers may need more ultrasounds during pregnancy than others, which is totally safe and does not mean anything is or will be wrong with you or your baby. No evidence has been found that shows ultrasounds cause any harm.

Is a 4D Ultrasound Safe?

A 4D Ultrasound is not much different than a 3D ultrasound. Unlike a 3D ultrasound, a 4D is able to show your baby’s movements in a video. A 4D ultrasound also uses soundwaves to develop what you see in the video. While a 3D ultrasound can give you a very detailed picture of your baby’s face, a 4D ultrasound can show you how your baby is moving in the womb.
