What to Expect During Your CT Scan

Getting a CT scan can be an unnerving experience for some. We want to keep you as informed as possible to alleviate any stress that may come along with the procedure. In this blog, you will learn exactly what you can expect at your CT scan.

What Is a CT Scan?

The first question to answer is: What is a CT scan? CT stands for computed tomography. This type of scan allows doctors to see the inside of your body. The advanced technology creates detailed pictures of anything from your heart to your femur. You can get a CT scan on any part of your body, and the procedure is completely painless.

Many people want to know what the machine looks like before they get the procedure done. The machine is a large donut-shaped device. Your body goes inside of the doughnut while the scan is being done. The top of the machine remains open so at no time will you be fully enclosed inside of the machine.

CT Scan Preparation

It is important to know how to prepare for your CT scan. Your radiologist might ask you to refrain from eating or drinking a few hours before the scan depending on what part of the body is being examined. You will be asked to remove anything metallic on your body such as piercings because they may interfere with the technology. Make sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing so you are comfortable when lying down in the machine. Again, depending on the part of the body being examined, you might be asked to wear a hospital gown.

During the procedure, you will lay down inside of the machine and you will be asked to stay very still so the radiology team can get clear pictures. You may be asked to hold your breath for just a few seconds at a time.

How Long Does a CT Scan Take?

People are also curious about how long a CT scan will take. This question does not have a definite answer because it depends on the body part that is being scanned. Sometimes a scan lasts just a few minutes while others can take up to 45 minutes. If you are concerned about the time, it would be best to discuss it with your radiologist beforehand.

A CT scan is a common and safe procedure. The team at A.T. Radiology wants to make your procedure as easy and comfortable as possible. Call us at (863) 419-8832 to learn more.
