Breast Biopsy Overview
A breast biopsy is a procedure to remove samples of breast tissue in order for it to be tested in a lab. It allows doctors to see if any abnormal cells are present in the breast. Your doctor might recommend a breast biopsy to evaluate a breast lump, a suspicious finding on a mammogram, or another breast problem. A breast biopsy will help determine if you need an additional treatment or procedure.
Preparing for a Breast Biopsy
If local anesthesia is used, you will be able to eat until four hours prior to the procedure. Stop drinking one hour before the biopsy. Do not use deodorant, lotion, or powder near your breast. Before your procedure, you should let your healthcare provider know about any medications you are taking or any allergies you have. Tell your doctor if you are unable to lie on your stomach for an extended period of time. Based on your conditions, your provider will give you specific instructions about how to prepare for your biopsy.
What to Expect During the Procedure
At A.T. Radiology, breast biopsies are done on an outpatient basis. On the day of your procedure, you will need to remove clothing above the waist, and you will be given a gown to wear. You will either lie on your stomach, lie on your back, or sit up.
The doctor will give you a local anesthetic through a small injection. You might feel a burning sensation until the area becomes numb. When your breast is numb, the doctor will use an ultrasound to guide the biopsy needle into the correct position. They will insert the needle into your breast through a tiny incision. Then, they will take a sample of tissue with the needle. It will likely feel like pressure on your breast, but the entire procedure is relatively painless.
Usually, a tiny marking clip will be placed inside your breast to mark the biopsy site. If any future procedure is needed, this allows doctors to easily locate the area. After the doctor takes all of the tissue samples, they will apply pressure to the biopsy site to stop the bleeding. You will receive an adhesive strip, a bandage, and an ice pack.
After the Procedure
You should be able to resume normal activities within 24 hours of the procedure. You should avoid strenuous activities for the rest of the day. Bruising is normal after a breast biopsy. Pain relievers such as Tylenol can help manage pain, and ice packs reduce any swelling.
Receiving the biopsy results can take several days. The tissue samples will be sent to a lab and examined. A pathologist will prepare a report for your doctor. After receiving the report, your doctor will discuss the results with you.
Risks Associated with Breast Biopsy
Bruising and swelling of the breast are common with a breast biopsy. There is a slight risk of infection or bleeding at the site of the biopsy. It is also possible for the breast to heal differently, resulting in an altered appearance. If you develop any signs of an infection (redness, fever, etc.), contact your healthcare provider immediately.
