MRIs are an essential part of any diagnostic imaging testing. However, many people who suffer from claustrophobia often avoid getting an MRI due to the enclosed nature of the machine. At A.T. Radiology, we offer open MRIs as an alternative to the traditional machines, which has helped nearly 99% of claustrophobic patients tolerate their exams.
What is Claustrophobia?
By definition, claustrophobia is the fear of being in an enclosed space for any period of time. It is estimated that between 1-15% of MRI patients suffer from claustrophobia, which prohibits them from being able to get an MRI without any level of sedation. However, an open MRI machine is the perfect solution for patients who require more space to alleviate the sense of panic and anxiety without sedatives.
What is an Open MRI?
In contrast to the closed-bore MRI, an open MRI machine has magnets on the top and bottom of the machine instead of all around, leaving the sides of the machine non-enclosed. Although an open MRI is not as effective for getting images of certain body parts, at A.T. Radiology, we can accommodate some patients with MRI claustrophobia using the machine for most screenings.
Advantages of an Open MRI
Comfort and Space
Generally speaking, open MRIs are still evolving as medicine evolves. Some open MRI machines (sem-open scanners) are open on each side, allowing the patient and doctor to have eye contact during the screening.
There are also options of scanners that allow patients to lie down, stand, or sit. These wide-open bore systems give the best flexibility and options for comfort. Most importantly, many open MRI machines allow patients to be close to their loved ones for extra emotional support.
A Quieter Screening Experience
Most open MRI machines are quieter than the traditional closed-bore MRI machines. This allows patients the opportunity to relax and have overall less anxiety.
Open MRIs are More Affordable
Although several factors determine the affordability of any screening, open MRIs are traditionally less expensive to install and maintain, which allows for more patient affordability. Contact us today if you have any questions regarding your exam costs and if A.T. Radiology is in your network.
Disadvantages of Open MRI Machines
Lower-Quality Images
Although not all diagnostic testing needed requires high-quality images, some patients will not need high-quality visuals to be able to diagnose their condition. Open MRIs Do Not See All Parts of the Body
Depth of Open MRI Images
The largest factor in deciding if a patient needs a closed or open MRI scan is the area the scan needs to image. Open MRIs do not offer the option to see deep inside tissue or body parts. However, they are great at addressing areas of the brain and spine.
Scan Duration is Increased
Unlike closed MRIs, open MRIs do not have magnets surrounding you, which means it could take more time for the MRI technologist to take the images needed.
