Women’s Imaging: 3D Mammography

A mammogram is an X-ray-based imaging test of the breasts. Use of mammographic screening over the past several decades has been proven to reduce breast cancer deaths. It is recommended that all women over 40 have an annual screening mammogram, or younger if you are at a higher risk for breast cancer.

The Difference Between 3D and 2D Mammograms

An important innovation known as digital breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, has demonstrated to be superior to traditional 2D mammography in screening women for breast cancer. 3D mammography is up to 40% more accurate than 2D mammography, and results in fewer call-backs and fewer false positives. This makes screening with 3D mammography more effective and convenient for most women.

There are two types of mammograms: Screening and diagnostic. A screening mammogram is recommended for all women as a means of detecting breast cancer early. If a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, her doctor may order a diagnostic mammogram—a more detailed imaging test of the breast to help guide treatment planning.
